Donations to NHS hospitals in Lothian are held in Lothian Health Board Endowment Fund which is:

  • A Scottish charity recognised by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator reference number SC007342
  • Entirely separate from government money used to provide health services in Lothian
  • Recognised by the Inland Revenue and benefits from generous tax concessions applicable to charities - reference number CR41376
  • Consists of donations from individuals and non-government organisations

Donations are welcomed to the Lothian Health Board Endowment Fund and you can support the Fund by making:

  • A donation, to which if you are a taxpayer we are able in most cases to claim an additional 25% of your donation from the government under the Gift Aid scheme
  • A legacy or bequest in your Will

May I specify how my donation is used?

If you so wish, without imposing any trust, you may specify your desire as to how you wish your donation to be used, and the Trustees will ensure that your donation is credited to an Endowment Fund whose purposes are most in accordance with your wishes. However, the Lothian NHS Board Endowment Fund Trustees wish to draw to your attention the advantages and benefits of donations being made for the general purposes of the charity within NHS Lothian and not for a specific purpose. In these cases, Trustees are able to use their discretion in expending such Endowment Funds on areas that due to

  • lack of awareness
  • lack of publicity

do not attract donations but would benefit tremendously from such expenditure. Such donations are valuable to the Trustees in enabling them to assist areas that are starved of endowment funds.

Who can make a donation?

  • Individuals
  • Clubs/societies
  • Work groups
  • Companies
  • Any other organisation that is not government funded
  • Individuals through payroll giving schemes

What is an Endowment Fund?

Lothian NHS Board Endowment Fund is a charity recognised by the Inland Revenue. Endowment Funds are completely separate from government money, and annual accounts are produced, audited by professional external auditors and are available for inspection. Individual funds can be held for a hospital, department, ward, service or research and donations are credited to the appropriate fund depending on the wishes of the donor. There are several hundred individual funds.

How will my donation be used?

If your donation is to be used generally for the benefit of NHS Lothian or a particular hospital, the Trustees will use their judgement in deciding how to make best use of your donation either across Lothian or at the hospital. In most cases clinicians are invited to put forward cases for use of such funds, and a bid process is used by the Trustees to decide which would make best use of your donation. In all cases, by statute expenditure must fall within the strict criteria of National Health Service purposes or research. This gives the Trustees the most flexibility in ensuring best use of your donation.

Alternatively you may wish to specify exactly how you wish the your donation to be used, for example:

  • For the benefit of a department or ward
  • For research into a particular illness
  • To purchase equipment
  • For patients or staff amenities

In all cases, the Endowment Fund Trustees are responsible for the management and control of endowment funds.

Over the years, many thousands of patients have benefited from the purchase of additional equipment and amenities, which were only made possible due to the generous donations by members of the public or other organisations. Staff benefit from further education and attending medical conferences funded from endowments. In addition, much medical research work is carried out which would not be possible without generous donations to Endowment Funds by members of the public or organisations.
