NHS Lothian is undertaking a joint public consultation with Light Pharmacy regarding their proposed application for a new pharmacy to open at the redevelopment land on Gorton Rd, Rosewell, Midlothian. 

Light Pharmacy who wish to submit the application have defined the neighbourhood as:

The whole village of Rosewell and surrounding farms. More specifically;

To the North – A6094

To the East – road running parallel to the East of Ferguson Park until it intersects Dalhousie Burn

To the South – from the above intersection follow unnamed road South then all the way West until intersection with A6094

To the West – A6094


The applicant plans to provide the following services from their pharmacy should the application be granted:

  • Dispensing of prescriptions
  • Chronic Medication Service
  • Acute Medication Service
  • Minor Ailment Service
  • Public Health Service (Smoking Cessation Services and Sexual Health Services)
  • Unscheduled Care – urgent supply of repeat medicines and appliances
  • Compliance Aids
  • Supervised self-administration of Methadone
  • Supervised self-administration of Burprenorphine
  • Stoma Care - appliance supply for patient with a colostomy or urostomy
  • Free prescription collection and delivery service

The applicant has also indicated that they would provide the following services if required to do so by NHS Lothian:

  • Injection Equipment Provision
  • Gluten free foods service
  • Pharmaceutical Advice to Care Homes
  • Palliative Care Network

The applicant plans to provide these services at the following times:

Monday: 0900-1800
Tuesday: 0900-1800
Wednesday: 0900-1800
Thursday: 0900-1800
Friday: 0900-1800
Saturday: 0900-1300
Sunday: Closed

As required by legislation, NHS Lothian and Light Pharmacy are undertaking a joint public consultation before the applicant makes their formal application. This consultation has two main purposes:

a. to assess the current provision of pharmaceutical services in the neighbourhood and whether it is adequate


b. to establish the level of support from residents in the neighbourhood for the application

All views submitted will be incorporated into a Consultation Analysis Report which will be taken into account by the NHS Lothian Pharmacy Practices Committee (PPC) which decides the outcome of the application.
