Healthy Start

Healthy Start is a UK-wide scheme to give pregnant women and families, milk, fresh and/or frozen fruit and vegetables and some types of formula milk as well as vitamins for pregnant women and children.

You qualify for Healthy Start if you’re at least 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four years old and you or your family get:
  • Income Support, or
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or
  • Child Tax Credit (with a family income of £16,190 or less per year)
  • Universal Credit (with a family take home pay of £408 or less per month)
You also qualify if you are under 18 and pregnant, even if you don’t get any of the above benefits

In Lothian women and children eligible for Healthy Start are given Healthy Start vitamins by their midwife or health visitor:
  • All pregnant women will recieve Healthy Start Vitamins from their Midwife
  • We have simplified rules for children's vitamin drops locally. If you are already in receipt of Healthy Start vouchers or think you are eligble, then you can ask for children's vitamin drops from your first appointment with the health visitor until your child's 4th birthday
  • Speak to your midwife or health visitor for more information
  • More information for parents can be found in this leaflet
