Expressing Breast milk

Expressing breast milk, by hand or pump, is useful in many ways.

  • Hand expressing works best in the beginning
    • Provides relief if your breasts are full and heavy
    • Helps your baby attach to your breast
    • Helps with blocked ducts and mastitis
    • Off to a Good Start has information on hand expressing and storage of expressed breast milk - page 50
  • Once breastfeeding is going well for you and your baby, you can use a breast pump to express milk for someone else to give to him if you are not around
    • NHS Lothian loans breast pumps on a short term basis, please contact your Midwife or Health Visitor

  • Expressing breast milk can help later on to fit breastfeeding in with your life, including returning to work.
