What We Do

Elective Orthopaedics

This is where patients who are suffering from a medical condition related to bone or muscle (i.e. painful Hip or Knee) elect to have a remedial operation to correct the condition (i.e. Hip or Knee Replacement). These types of treatment are mostly undertaken at the Royal Infirmary, Little France although some minor treatments are available at St. John’s, Howden. Minor elective operations may be conducted as “Day Case Surgery”, where patients are only in hospital for a day.

Outpatient clinics for Elective Orthopaedics are held at the Royal Infirmary, Little France and the Lauriston Building close to the Old Royal. Some clinics are also held at St John’s and a small outpatient service is also available at Roodlands Hospital, East Lothian.

Pre-Admission Clinics are clinics that elective patients attend prior to their admission. They are held in the Pre-Admission/Orthopaedic Admission Unit located on the first floor passed Ward 109.

Trauma Orthopaedics

This is where patients who have suffered a fracture as the result of an accident or other trauma are operated on to stabilise or correct the condition. Trauma orthopaedic conditions are treated at the Royal Infirmary, Little France.

Fracture clinics for the Trauma Service are held at OP6, Royal Infirmary, Little France. Please click on the link to find out more about the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit.
