Welcome to the Assisted Conception Unit, part of the integrated fertility services offered by the Lothian University Hospitals Division at the Royal Infirmary. We have been providing a high standard of care to couples and individuals with fertility problems since 1983. The unit is based in an NHS teaching hospital and we are able to provide a full range of fertility, gynaecology and maternity services from diagnosis of infertility through to delivery of your baby, on one site. The unit is licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority. We also have a Quality Management System which has achieved ISO 9001:2008 certification.
We aim to support you, offering guidance and counselling throughout your care. We are committed to the provision of a high quality and evidence based clinical care in a friendly environment, sensitive to your needs.
Our medical, scientific and nursing teams are highly skilled, experienced and committed to providing a service of the highest quality. By tailoring your treatment specifically to your clinical needs, we are able to give you the best chance of success and this is reflected in our current results.
There is an active research programme in collaboration with the medical school at the University of Edinburgh looking at ways of improving diagnosis and treatment of infertility. One recent development is the preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) service in collaboration with the Regional Genetic Service to allow screening of embryos for serious genetic diseases before they are implanted in the womb.
