Arts in Health and Wellbeing
Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation fund and manage the Arts & Health programme at NHS Lothian sites. Following the appointment of an Arts Manager in 2014, an Arts in Health and Wellbeing Strategy has been developed and a specialist arts team appointed to take forward arts activity on behalf of NHS Lothian.
The vision of the arts programme is to improve the health and wellbeing of staff, patients and visitors through the provision of high quality arts in the healthcare environment and patient experience, to conserve the artistic assets of NHS Lothian and to foster a culture in which the benefits of the arts and the skills of the artist are valued across the service.
These are achieved through:
- the management of an art collection of over 2500 works
- changing hospital gallery exhibitions
- a thriving participatory workshop and live music programme and
- a range of high-quality public art and design commissions and residencies as part of new capital builds
In addition to funding arts in health projects, trustees are funding a clinical post of Head of Arts Therapies within NHS Lothian, to deliver strategic vision and leadership for this service and to collaborate with the Arts Therapies Team, Arts Manager and Arts in Health organisations to develop clear arts-related activities and treatments throughout the patient pathway.
