Catch up Clinics for MMR and HPV vaccines

Teenagers across Lothian are being urged to protect themselves and others against serious illness by ensuring they have completed their vaccinations.

To help those who may have missed out on the opportunity at school, NHS Lothian has set up a series of catch up clinics throughout the month of June. Young people from across Lothian can attend any of the clinics listed below.

Vaccinations given in secondary school include HPV for girls in S1 and S2 and the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) for those who did not complete the course in childhood.

Dr Lorna Willocks, Consultant in Public Health, has said: "These vaccinations are very important in that they protect you from some serious infections. We have an effective vaccine, so I encourage you to come forward to help protect yourself. It is vitally important to ensure you get the correct number of doses. If you are in any doubt about how many doses you need speak to your immunisation nurse at the drop in clinics.”

HPV (Human papillomavirus) Vaccination (Girls S1-S2)

If you are a girl, in S1-S2, and you have missed your vaccination in school you will receive a letter inviting you to get attend one of these clinics. Older girls who have missed their vaccines will also be invited to attend.

The HPV vaccine can help to protect against cervical cancer and also helps protect against two other types of HPV virus which are responsible for 90% of the cases of genital warts. You cannot get HPV from the vaccination.

You may require two or three doses of this vaccine depending on your circumstances.

MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) Vaccination (Girls and

Boys S1-S6)

If you are of school age (S1-S6) and you have not had both of your MMR vaccines, please take this opportunity to protect yourself from these serious diseases.

Measles, Mumps and Rubella are all highly infectious and can only be prevented by immunisation.

This vaccination is usually given during childhood but if missed can be given at any age. Please check your vaccination status with your family or GP.
