Work Underway For New Gullane Centre

Work has started on site at Hamilton Road, Gullane on the new £2.9m Day Centre and Medical Practice.

The new purpose built facility is due to be complete by November and will provide a day centre and a new home for the local GP practice.

The building itself will feature locally accessed materials including sandstone and timber frames and the contemporary design incorporates energy efficient measures including a living sedum roof and air source heating. The heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside and can get heat from the air even when the temperature outside is well below freezing!

The centre is being delivered by the hub South East Scotland Limited (hubCo) and built by GRAHAM Construction. The hubCo has been established to assist its public sector partners to develop high quality community facilities on time and on budget. These new community facilities will support the delivery of co-located services and over the next ten years, projects worth over £300 million are expected under the hub South East programme, which covers Edinburgh, Lothians and the Borders.

Provost Broun-Lindsay said: “As East Lothian continues to grow in population the council has a responsibility to ensure that local services continue to meet demand. The new Day Centre and Medical Practice will provide much needed purpose built accommodation to serve the growing needs of the local community.”

Mike Ash, Chair, East Lothian Community Health Partnership, NHS Lothian, said: “A great deal of work has gone into reaching this stage and it’s exciting to see this development now underway.

The proposed new purpose-built GP practice premises which will bring modern, up-to-the minute and improved healthcare facilities, will I am sure be welcomed by the local community.”

The new medical centre is a joint development between NHS Lothian and the Council and is the first joint agency project to be developed in East Lothian by the hub South East Scotland Territory programme.

Jo Elliot, Chair of hub South East Scotland, commented:  “We are delighted that work has now begun, extending our successful relationship with East Lothian Council and NHS Lothian. As a company, hub is all about partnership working between local authority, NHS and the private sector, focused on delivering excellent community facilities for local people, and this new building represents a big step forward in the quality of the infrastructure for health and social care in the Gullane area.”

Neil McFarlane, regional director of Graham Construction said: “We are tremendously proud to be delivering this excellent project on behalf of hub South East Scotland and we anticipate it being warmly welcomed by the community in Gullane.

“Graham takes its responsibilities to the communities it operates within very seriously and we have already been in close consultation with local residents about the extent of the work and look forward to creating employment and training opportunities for local people wherever possible.”
