Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre Moves A Step Closer

Work on the new Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre moved a step forward following an announcement today (10 November 2011).

Joint developers, NHS Lothian and City of Edinburgh Council (CEC), have appointed hub South East Scotland Limited to deliver the facility who have selected the contractor Morrison Construction to develop the site.

Situated on the Harvesters Way site, the £12-million complex, a joint project between NHS Lothian and CEC, will offer a range of services to
the local community including; the Wester Hailes Medical Practice and community health services, such as podiatry, midwifery, dentistry, paediatrics, mental health, and learning disability care.

City council departments, such as health and social care, children and families and criminal justice social work practice teams will be based there. The development will also house local voluntary organisation the Wester Hailes Health Agency.

Dr Charles Winstanley, Chair, NHS Lothian, said: “We are delighted that the project has taken another step forward. The Centre will offer many wide-ranging benefits to the people of Wester Hailes and surrounding areas in the years to come.”

Councillor Paul Edie, Health and Social Care Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “It's great news that the contractors will be starting work on this exciting project soon. Having all these facilities in one location will benefit everyone in the community and the new site will transform a derelict part of the neighbourhood into a thriving arena.”

Jo Elliot, Chairman of hub South East Scotland Ltd, added: “We know that a lot of people have been working hard for a long time to bring this important community project to fruition and so we are especially delighted to have been able to help bring it to site through hub. We look forward to working closely with NHS Lothian, City of Edinburgh Council, the local community and all our hub partners to ensure the success of the project.”

Anticipated completion of the development is 2013.
