Local team scoop national award

East and Midlothian pulmonary rehabilitation team has scooped a prestigious eHealth insider award at a ceremony in London this month.

The team, part of East and Midlothian Community Health Partnership (CHP), won the national award for ‘Best use of Telehealth and Telecare’ at the awards held at the Connaught Rooms, in the UK capital.

Morag Barrow, Allied Health Professional Manager, East and Midlothian CHP said:

“We are using this innovative, digital technology to increase the number of patients we can treat not just in the one area but across different areas at the same time.  Another advantage this technology offers is that it enables us to reach patients in more rural areas who would otherwise have to travel to receive treatment.”

David Small, general manager, East and Midlothian CHP, said:

“I congratulate the team which is a fitting accolade for all their hard work in developing the use of telehealth and telecare and in particular video conferencing which is bringing real benefits to patients.”

Through the use of video conferencing, staff can run a class in one location and offer it to patients in a different location at the same time across East Lothian.  This has led the team to be able to increase the number of patients it treats by thirty per cent.

The team has plans to develop the initiative further in the coming months, by delivering rehabilitation in people’s own homes. This will allow the team member to provide the treatment from her working environment to up to five people in their homes at once.
