Suicide Awareness Week Launches

West Lothian Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) lends its support to Suicide Awareness Week (7-12 September) by hosting a memorial service for those touched by suicide.

The memorial service was arranged in partnership with a range of organisations, community groups and individuals throughout West Lothian, including Choose Life.

Every day, two people take their own lives in Scotland and it is the biggest killer of young people. Every life lost to suicide leaves behind a trail of devastation and unanswered questions.

The service will take place at St Andrews Church in Livingston on Sunday 13 September at 3pm.  A range of information will be available and staff will be on hand to help offer advice. Anyone who is feeling suicidal or has been affected by the issue is encouraged to come along.

Jim Forrest, Director, West Lothian CHCP said:

“Any life lost to suicide causes great sadness for the families and friends as well as the local community.
“Suicide prevention week emphasises the issues around suicide, while also challenging harmful taboos that stop people from talking openly about their feelings.
“We hope that this event will encourage people to talk about their feelings with a health professional they trust.”

June Gilfether, Choose Life Development Officer, West Lothian CHCP said:

“The key message for suicide prevention week is ‘don’t hide it, talk about it’. Many people feel they can’t talk about feeling suicidal, or that asking someone if they are feeling suicidal will somehow put the idea in their head.  In fact nothing could be further from the truth.
“We know talking about how we feel is extremely important and can help prevent the everyday problems building up that may overwhelm us”

To raise awareness of suicide prevention, a nationwide campaign consisting of radio and online advertising will launch this week.   The message of the campaign is simple:  if you are feeling suicidal, talk to a health professional or someone you trust or call a helpline such as Breathing Space or Samaritans.  A wide range of events will be taking place through Edinburgh and the Lothians to mark the week.

If you are feeling suicidal or suspect that someone you know is considering suicide, there are a number of help lines to contact:
