Base your meals on starchy foods

  • Have bread, potatoes, pasta, rice or low sugar cereal with every meal
  • More potato, pasta or rice less meat and chicken

Eat lots of fruit and vegetables

  • Have fruit as a snack
  • Extra vegetables  with  meals
  • Add vegetables when cooking
  • Add fruit to breakfast cereal
  • Frozen vegetables can be as good as fresh

Eat more fish; include oily fish at least once a week

  • Oily fish includes salmon; herring; mackerel; sardines; pilchards and fresh tuna.
  • Grill or bake fish covered in breadcrumbs rather than fry

Cut down on saturated fat and sugar

  • Buy lean meat and trim of the fat
  • Use a non-stick pan and use less or no added fat
  • Choose a lower fat milk
  • Remove skin from chicken
  • Use  natural yoghurt instead of cream
  • Grill rather than fry
  • Less cheese and more vegetables on pizza
  • Use a reduced fat cheese or less of a very strong cheese.
  • Have sugar free drinks instead of sugary ones
  • Have water instead of sweet drinks

Try to eat less salt

  • Cook more food from scratch
  • Use herbs and spices instead of salt
  • Think and taste before you add salt at the table.

Drink Plenty Water

  • Stop and have a drink between meals
  • Drink a glass of water with your meal

Don’t skip breakfast

  • Breakfast is the most important meal of the day
  • Always start the day with something to eat
  • A banana is the ultimate fast food in the morning.
