Top tips for getting started

A little can mean a lot!  Remember that small changes can start to lead to big benefits.

Think about what you already currently do, and how you can make some small changes.  When you're feeling more fit and able, incorporate more into your day.

Walk whenever you can
One of the easiest and most natural ways to get active!

Live Actively
The easiest way to increase your physical activity is to make it a part of your day.  You can try to walk as much as you can, whether that be to work or to the TV instead of using the remote control.  Dance to music while you're doing the housework, or why not get on your bike?

Keep it personal
People become physically active, and incorporate it into their life for a wide range of reasons. Think about your own motivation for being more active.  Changes are easier to make and maintain if they're meaningful and important to you.

Make it green and get your Vitamin G
'Green exercise', being outside and near nature while you're being physically active, for even just five minutes, boosts your feeling of well being and self esteem.

Take a break from work, or organise a 'walking' meeting outside. Find your local park.  Make Edinburgh your 'gym'. Walk the Royal Mile.

Get digging and get gardening
Gardening is an outdoor hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, abilities and from all walks of life. It's a great way to get active, improve your mood and sense of wellbeing, and an easy way to get your five a day, reducing food miles in the process.

Why not have a nosey at the community gardens and farms in your area, or volunteer at someone else's garden?
