smokefreeLothian Service

The smokefreeLothian Service runs throughout Lothian. Our specially trained stop smoking advisors can offer support and advice tailored to you. We know it can be difficult to stop smoking but you can do it and we are here to help. In fact you are 4 times more likely to stop with our help!

Community Services

Our community services run weekly support sessions which are free and usually open access. They are available in a range of venues and locations, taking place throughout the day and evening, normally lasting one hour. Our sessions are very informal and give you the opportunity to speak to others who are also trying to stop smoking. Group support is known to be one of the most effective ways to successfully stop smoking. To find out where your local stop smoking support session is go to the contact details page.

Sessions are run by trained stop smoking advisors who will assess your smoking behaviour and can recommend a medication such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to help you stop smoking. They can then arrange for a prescription to be requested from your GP which you can pick up 3-5 days after the session. People are encouraged to attend support weekly as far as possible and until they have completed their course of medication. This is so that we can keep up to date with your prescription but more importantly, support you through any challenging times and assist with behaviour change. Prescriptions are given for 2-4 weeks at a time. Most courses of medication last 12 weeks but people can attend the support sessions for as long as they want. Many people find continuing to attend a session from time to time keeps them focussed and is good for relapse prevention.

If attending one of our group sessions isn’t suitable for you then we also offer one to one appointments, home visits, telephone or email support depending on circumstances. Contact your local office for more details.
