Parking Within NHS Lothian

It is advisable when attending or visiting the hospital to use public transport where possible, although we recognise that this may not be the best option in all circumstances. Information on the main public transport availability can be found on our Travel section.

Limited parking is therefore available on all the main sites with the exception of Lauriston Building, the PAEP and WG, although all sites are very busy during the day, Monday to Friday.  Parking is very limited at the RHSC.

Parking may be available in the surrounding streets however this is metered within the city of Edinburgh.

On all our sites a 10mph speed limit is specified.  All road markings must be adhered to.  Other regulations are in operation within the main sites, these instructions must be followed where displayed.

Parking is free at all our sites with the exception of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.  These are as follows:

  • 0-1 hour £1.30
  • 1-2 hours £2.30
  • 2-3 hours £3.30
  • 3-4 hours £4.30
  • 4-5 hours £5.30
  • 5-6 hours £6.50
  • Over 6 hours £7.00
  • Part day thereafter £7.00

Lost tickets charged at full daily rate

Concessions are available under certain circumstances:

  1. Discounted red voucher is available to help visitors of patients where attendance at the hospital relates to a case of extreme trauma / bereavement.
  2. Discounted blue voucher is available for patient / visitors
      • whose vehicle is onsite for longer than 24hours, for each day or part day after the first 24hours.
      • whose parking charges in the last seven days have already exceeded £10.00
      • who attend on a regular basis (once a week or more) and who will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Some sites, including SJH, WGH, RIE, Roodlands have designated patient parking areas which are patrolled by our staff to support the high turnover of patients attending clinics.

The main hospital sites have limited drop off and collection facilities, however these are not waiting areas and drivers must remove their vehicle to a parking area.

Disabled Parking is available on all sites please ensure your blue badge is displayed in your vehicle at all times when using these spaces.  Some disabled parking spaces are located within the car parking area, which in the case of the RIE will attract a parking charge.

Commercial vehicles using our sites must adhere to the Commercial Vehicle Operating Procedures for each site, which can be found on our Transport and Access Information section.

These procedures will give guidance on any restrictions to vehicle size and delivery areas.  We operate a policy of no reversing without the use of a reversing assistant.

We respectfully request that all visitors to our sites make use of footpaths and walk behind barriers where provided.  And otherwise take care when access and egressing buildings.  Please follow local site signs which may be displayed.
