Community

Approximately 9,000 women in Lothian access maternity services each year. Women would normally access care via their community midwife or General Practitioner. Teams of community midwives are based in the City of Edinburgh, East, Mid and West Lothian and these midwives and their hospital based colleagues provide care to women throughout their pregnancy and after the birth. Care may be shared with the General Practitioner and/or the named Obstetrician.

The philosophy of care is evidence-based and the choice of place of birth is at home, the Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France or St John’s Hospital in Livingston. The community midwives work closely with their colleagues in the community setting which enables a holistic and seamless approach to care.
